Obituary for John Phillip Duncan

Massac/Pope County, IL — John Phillip Duncan, age 62, passed away April 18, 2013 at his home surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer.
Phillip is survived by his wife, Susanna (Barger) Duncan; three daughters, Nikita and Tony Shoulta, Jody Werner, Lindsey Duncan and Josh Tirey; one grandson, Blake Werner; four granddaughters, Karsyn Shoulta, Madison Werner, Landree Shoulta, Lydia Tirey, all from Massac County; mother, Mildred (Rixie) Duncan, Golconda; two brothers, Jonathan and Nikki Duncan, Larry and Patty Duncan; two sisters, Phyllis Nichols, Linda Curry; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Phillip was preceded in death by his father, John Duncan; one son, Phillip Noel Duncan; one nephew, Josh Duncan; niece, Tricia Duncan; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Deana (Barger) and Darryl Smith.
Phillip was born October 20, 1950 and grew up in Brownfield, IL (Pope County).  He and Susanna celebrated 40 years of marriage last November. He was a Vietnam Veteran having served two years with distinction in the U.S. ARMY 101st Airborne Division. After his service to our country, he was a member of the Laborers Union, worked for Westvaco cutting pines for many years, and also cut timber with his father and brothers. He worked building the Smithland Lock and Dam at what was called Dog Island in south Pope County. Later, he worked through the Corp of Engineers at the Brookport Lock and Dam # 52 and then transferred to Smithland Lock and Dam, where he retired in 2010 after 25 years of service. He was a member of Mt. Sterling Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Brookport, IL. He loved fishing, hunting, NASCAR, gardening and his purple Martins.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: Ozark Teen Challenge International and mailed to: Aly Funeral Home PO Box 69 Eddyville, IL 62928.

Visitation will be held from 4-8pm on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Aly Funeral Home, Eddyville, IL. 

Graveside service will be 2pm on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Mt. Sterling Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Brookport, IL.
