Obituary for JD Hazel

"Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn, thru the storm, thru the night, lead me on to the light; Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home."

The community of Eddyville lost a dear husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, neighbor, and friend when he answered the call of his Lord and Savior to enter into eternal rest on Friday at his home near Eddyville.

J.D. (John David) Hazel departed this life on at 10:36 a.m. on March 24, 2017 having attained the age of 90 years, 1 month, and 24 days. He was born to William Elmer and Eula Augusta (Isaac) Hazel on January 29, 1927 of the Cedar Grove Community.

J.D. was united in marriage to Vera Terry on July 15, 1949 also of the Eddyville community. They would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this July.

He was a devoted family man doing what was necessary to make a life for his family. He and Vera spent their entire lives in the Eddyville community except for a few years in the early 50s and early 80s in which he had to leave the area to find work. During his lifetime J.D. had farmed both cattle and crops while also working as a union teamster, then a laborer, and finally joining the carpenters union #605 in Golconda which later became #640 in Metropolis.

J.D. loved farming and especially wood working. He also loved to travel with the goal of visiting all 50 states; he lacked visiting just four states in reaching his goal.

J.D. accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age and united with New Liberty Church just south of his home where he remained a member until his passing; he served as Elder of the church for many years. He also served as trustee of the New Liberty Cemetery.

J.D. was initiated into the Eddyville Masonic Lodge in March of 1948 and became a master Mason that same month. He served as Worshipful Master many times over the years. In September of that same year, J.D. was also initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star in Eddyville. He served as Worthy Patron several times over the years and was also a dual member of the Stonefort OES.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his beloved wife and four living children: his wife Vera; 1 son, Lynn (Dellenia) Hazel of Ledford, IL; and 3 daughters, Linda (Jeff) Aly of Eddyville, IL; Debra (James) Cook of Texarkana, TX; and Dawn Hazel (Norman Maynor) of Eddyville, IL; 13 living grandchildren – Melinda Cates, Jennifer Hazel, Heather Nyberg, Sarah Hazel, and Joshua Hazel; Erin Aly, April Hogg, Jeffrey Aly, and Amber Aly; Patricia Hinojos and Brandy Hall; J’Nessa Stone and Christopher Reed; and 24 great grandchildren.

J.D. was preceded in death by both his parents; brothers, Murrell Hazel and Daryl Hazel; an infant son, David Martin; infant twin grandbabies, Michael and Michelle Hazel; and a grandson Jeremiah Hazel.

Funeral services will be conducted by pastors Kevin Richerson, Ronald Jackson, and Erick Bauer and will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 27, 2017 at New Liberty Church just south of Eddyville, IL with burial immediately following at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Eddyville. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at New Liberty Church with Masonic Rites at beginning at 6 p.m on Sunday, March 26, 2017.

Memorials may be made to: I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Eddyville, PO Box 69 Eddyville, IL 62928. Visit to leave an online condolence.

“Nothing touches me quite like Calvary, For it was there my blessed Savior set me free; All the old things that I used to love have now ceased to be, For nothing touches me quite like Calvary”.
