Obituary for Dr. Robert "Bob" P. Randolph, CAPT,USN (ret)

Dr. Robert “Bob” P. Randolph, CAPT, USN (ret), 76, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away early in the morning on Thursday, December 17, 2020.
Bob was born on November 26, 1944 in Norfolk, VA to A. Wayne Randolph and Melva (Stieg) Randolph. He married Petronella “Ronnie” Ten Heuvel on December 15, 1975.
He was a 1962 graduate of Macomb High School and then attended Southern Illinois University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1966 majoring in Zoology. Bob continued his education at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine where he graduated in 1970 as a Doctor of Medicine.
Bob volunteered for service in the United States Navy in 1967 and began his 36-year long career with the Navy as a flight surgeon on the USS SARATOGA (CV-60) deployed for combat operations in the Vietnam War. Some of his subsequent tours included: serving as the first fulltime flight surgeon for the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron (Blue Angels); Navy Region Medical Centers Portsmouth, San Diego, and Okinawa; Officer in Charge Surgical Platoon Cadre Unit 11; VFC-12 at Naval Air Station Oceana; and Commanding Officer, Naval Reserve Naval Hospital Peoria, Illinois. For his service, Captain Randolph was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, and numerous other personal and unit combat awards and citations. Additionally, in 1975 at the Aerospace Medical Convention, Bob was the inaugural recipient of the annual “Richard E. Luehrs Memorial Award, Flight Surgeon of the Year.”
Dr. Randolph continued his service to the nation in the Navy reserves while entering private practice as an orthopedic surgeon and taking residence in Macomb, Illinois in 1984. As part of his surgical duties, Dr. Randolph provided care to patients at Carthage Memorial Hospital, Culbertson Memorial Hospital, and McDonough District Hospital. He also served as one of the Team Physicians for the Western Illinois University Intercollegiate Athletic Program and taught as an adjunct professor for the Department of Physical Education. He was a lifelong fan of Leatherneck football and a favorite of many of the players who frequently visited him at his farm.
In 2003, Bob took the opportunity to move back to Virginia Beach and run the Orthopedic Clinic at Naval Air Station Oceana in the back of the “little gym.” He spent the next 15 years doing what he loved the most; keeping Navy aviators healthy and in the cockpit. His lasting legacy can be heard every day as jets launch out of Oceana and roar over the oceanfront. With his medical career having come full circle back to where it began, Bob retired in 2018 to spend time with family and loved ones.
Bob was happiest when surrounded by family, friends, patients, and sometimes complete strangers who took the time to listen to him recount the tales of combat missions or one of his favorite flights with his Vietnam buddies. He also loved spending time hunting and relaxing with friends at his cabin in Pope County, Illinois.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by son Brett of Mt. Prospect; daughter Ariana (Nathan) Williams of Virginia Beach; four granddaughters Sophie, Penny, Annabel, and Lucy; and brother Stanley of Macomb.
A graveside service was held on Tuesday, Dec 22, at the Sulphur Springs Cemetery. A celebration of life memorial service is planned for the summer of 2021 in Virginia Beach for friends and family members. Donations to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society
