Obituary for Dorris Gaylon Thomas
Dorris Gaylon Thomas, age 82, of Golconda, IL passed away March 16, 2021 at Parkview Nursing and Rehab in Paducah, KY. He was born March 23, 1938 to Rev. Willie Thomas and Floe Burklow Thomas. He spent his life in Pope County where he found pleasure in nature. “There’s another one,” he would declare as he plucked a four-leaf clover as if it should have been obvious to any passerby.
While attending the church his father was a pastoring, he met the love of his life, Sharon LaDonna Newton, they married on November 15, 1958. The “Brownfield Loverboy” gathered bouquets of daffodils (Easter flowers), roses, whatever was in bloom, as he walked on the farm and he delivered them to Sharon with a mischievous grin.
Dorris is survived by his wife, Sharon Thomas; four daughters, Twila (Mark) Staton of Brownfield, IL, Trina (Ken) Slaughter of Milford, OH, Teresa (Scott) Miller of St. Louis, MO, Tammy (Gary) Adkerson of Rockvale, TN; seven grandchildren, Katherine (Gib) Reynolds of Waco, TX, Isaac Miller of St. Louis, MO, Moriah (Josiah Lee) Yates of Toledo, OH, Josiah Slaughter of Milford, OH, Madalynn Adkerson of Rockvale, TN, Emmaline Adkerson of Rockvale, TN, Samuel Adkerson of Rockvale, TN.
Through the years Dorris worked at Dixon Springs State Park, the Ambulance service and the Illinois Department of Corrections but his lifelong passion was horses.
Dorris is gone from us now. He hasn’t “gone to Halifax” but rather to heaven where he was greeted by his sister, Virginia Rambo, his parents, Rev. Willie and Floe Thomas, and his savior, Jesus.
Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2021 at Aly Funeral Home in Eddyville, IL. Rev. Mark Staton will conduct the service. Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. till time of service.
