Obituary for Daniel Gurley

Daniel Laurence Gurley 47 of Green City, Mo, formerly of Decatur, IL, passed away March 9, 2017 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO with his family by his side after battling leukemia.

Dan was born July 20, 1969 to Lewis Gurley and Judith Stroup in Decatur, IL. Dan (Trip) graduated from Mt. Zion High School in 1988. He attended ITT technical Institute in Indianapolis Indiana from 1988-1990. He proudly served 5 years in the US ARMY and was honorably discharged in 1997. He moved to Green City, Mo and worked in the agricultural industry and most recently worked for Smithfield foods in Milan, Mo.

Dan loved fishing, hunting and spending time outdoors. He was an avid reader and enjoyed science fiction and fantasy novels. Dan also loved to grill and made the best steaks and many other treats for family and friends to enjoy. He was a joker and liked to keep everyone laughing even in the toughest of times. He was a proud father and grandfather.

Dan is survived by his daughter Melinda Gurley and granddaughter Coraline Gurley-Poland of Decatur, IL, Mother Judith Stroup of Decatur, IL, Grandmother Darlene Hull of Litchfield, IL Brothers: Paul (Adrienne) Gurley of Decatur, IL, Jeff Novota of Decatur, IL, Sisters: Amanda Gurley of Decatur, IL, Sara (Duane) Herschberger of Milan, Mo, and Nieces and Nephews: Tristian, Karley, Hailey and Holly Herschberger: Lola, Gus, and Tillie Gurley: Emma, Violet, and Emery Novota.

He was proceeded in death by his father Lewis Gurley, grandparents Daniel and Bessie Gurley, and grandfather Laurence Hull.

Graveside services will be held April 22, 2017 at 10:00 am at Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Honey Bend, IL followed by memorial and luncheon at 12:00, Walton Park, 10207 Niemanville Trail, Litchfield, IL. Casual attire is requested and bring a fishing pole so you can drop a line in and share your favorite stories of Dan.
