Obituary for Bettye Lauderdale

Bettye June Lockman Lauderdale was born September 27, 1926 in West Frankfort, Illinois to William Redman Lockman and Alma Faye Lawrence Lockman.
She attended grammar and high schools in West Frankfort.  She was raised in a loving Christian home, surrounded by cousins and adult relatives who filled her young life with joy.
In high school, Bettye was editor of several school publications and was first chair trumpet.  She was often called out of class to play “Taps” for the military funerals of local fallen soldiers in WW II.
Bettye attended SIU Normal School (now SIU) in Carbondale, Illinois, and became a teacher.  Her first teaching job was in Golconda, Illinois.  She met a handsome school teacher there, Eugene Lauderdale, who soon became her husband.
Bettye and Gene raised corn, beans, hay, cattle, sheep, hogs, coon dogs and bird dogs, and four girls in their forty-nine years together.  Their girls, Jean Ann McBride, Marybeth Lauderdale, Julia Lynn Orzeske, and Alice Jane Green and their unions brought Bettye 23 grand and great-grandchildren.
Bettye taught at Pope County High School and the Meridian School District, at both elementary and high school levels, for a total of twenty-six years. She also worked as the secretary at the University of Illinois Dixon Springs Experiment Station, where her husband was the Flock Foreman. Bettye taught at Shawnee College and Vienna Correctional Center.  Her former students, of whom she was always very proud, span the world. For Bettye’s 80th birthday, her daughters established a scholarship at SIU honoring her many years of teaching.
Bettye was active in and loved her community and they loved and cared for her with great kindness.  She was active in the Pope County Historical Society, the Garden Club, the Retired Teachers’ Association, the Pope-Hardin County Homemakers, the Singing Huggers, the Golden Circle Senior Center, the Farm Bureau, Relay for Life/American Cancer Society, Caravan for Christ, Trinity Methodist Church of West Frankfort, Mt. Zion Cemetery Association, and the First United Methodist Church of Golconda.
Bettye will be long-remembered for her participation in local fundraisers, in particular at the age of eighty-five, emerging from a large wedding cake in a bachelor party skit while wearing her bathing suit.  Bettye showed her community spirit by riding on the Golden Circle floats and serving as Grand Marshall of the annual Deer Festival Parade.
The family requests no flowers, but for those who are so inclined to make donations to the Gene and Bettye Lauderdale SIU Scholarship Fund at SIU Foundation, Colyer Hall – Mail Code 6805, 1235 Douglas Drive, Carbondale, Illinois 62901, or by visiting www.siuf.org/making-a-gift/give-online/
Memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday February 14, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Golconda, Illinois. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until time of service on Saturday. Pastor Cherrie Wilkerson, Rev. Billy E. Green, and Bro. Kevin Richerson will conduct the service.
