Obituary for Amy Lou Bannon

Amy Lou Bannon, age 88, of Golconda, IL, passed away February 27, 2017 at her home surrounded by a crackling fire, comforting aromas from the kitchen, and her loving family. She was born Amelia Louisa (Amy Lou) on August 29, 1928 in Rosiclare, IL to Harry Atwell Curtis, age 47, and Sylvia (Jenkins) Curtis, age 30. Amy Lou and her family lived in Brookport until the flood of 1937, moving a couple of times until they settled at their home place on Rosebud Rd in Massac County in June 1941. She graduated from Metropolis Community High School in 1946. She attended SIU only briefly, as her strong desire to be at home with family and friends was felt at a young age. Amy Lou married George Fredrick Kraper on August 24, 1947, and he preceded her in death on March 14, 1972. They moved to the Kraper home in Massac County along what is now IL State Highway 145, and lived there for two years, where her mother-in-law, Amelia Kraper, instilled in her a deep love of cooking. George and Amy Lou bought their beloved house and farm on Old Golconda Rd in 1949 and moved to Pope County. She worked at Patton Equipment as a bookkeeper for a few years. Their first three sons, Curt (9-21-1948), George Jr. (11-9-1949), and Jon (12-6-1953) were all born in Paducah at Riverside Hospital, their fourth son, Tom (7-15-1956) was born at home, and their daughter, Charlotte (10-10-1964) was born in the car in Pope County on the way to Hardin County Hospital. In 1964, Amy Lou began working for the United States Postal Service as a substitute Rural Carrier, and later became the Route #3 full time Rural Carrier. She married John Francis Bannon on October 23, 1976. Amy Lou and Johnie were inseparable best friends. They had several cherished friends through the years, enjoying many social events at their home and within the community, always having fun together. Amy Lou and Johnie both retired from the US Postal Service on November 30, 1990.
Amy Lou was the quintessential hostess, gaining pleasure from cooking hearty meals for family and friends, serving elegant dishes throughout many years of dinner parties, feeding hungry ball players after games, and putting together delicious snacks for her many organizational meetings. Her green thumb was inherited from her mother and translated further into her love of the natural beauty of southern Illinois, especially Pope County. She was enamored with the rocks, trees, and hills of her home. Amy Lou was extremely active in many different community organizations, but she had a particular affinity to groups involved in the promotion of recreation and tourism in Pope County. She wanted others to experience and to enjoy her idea of “home”. She was a founding member of the Shawnee Hills Recreation Association and served on the Lusk Creek Conservancy District Board from its inception until her passing. She was also a past board member of the Shawnee Resource Conservation and Development Area, Inc. Amy Lou was a long standing volunteer for Main Street Golconda and its subsidiaries, serving from 1993-2005. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Golconda, a member of the First Nighters homemakers group for nearly 50 years, Shawnee Belles Red Hat Club for 12 years, and served as a 4-H leader for a number of years. When Amy Lou hosted programs for these various organizations, she was always very professional, thorough, and detail-oriented. Amy Lou and Johnnie, a retired Post Master, were active with the 629 Retired Post Master Group.
Amy Lou is survived by her husband, John Bannon of Golconda, IL; five children, Curtis Edward Kraper and wife Ruth of Paducah, KY; George Fredrick (Yotts) Kraper, Jr. and Jim Snopko of Springfield, IL; Jonathon Gilbert Kraper of Golconda, IL; Thomas Henry Kraper of Elizabethtown,
