Obituary for Alvis Earl Rector

Alvis Earl Rector was born on October 15, 1930 in St. Louis, Mo and, soon after birth, was somewhat mentally and physically handicapped. He lived with his parents and worked at several jobs, mostly as a cafeteria (food service) worker.   After his father, Ira, experienced a heart attack in his early 60's, the family moved to Golconda, Illinois near where his father and mother, Alma, were born and raised.
Following Ira's death in 1973, Alvis and his mother moved to Alexandria, Virginia to live with his sister, Millie, and her husband, Bob.  Alvis was able to find employment in food service with the Drug Enforcement Agency.  He achieved a degree of independence through job training that his sister was able to procure for him and was actively involved with a local Church.    Alvis began to have trouble with his legs (Doctors called it spastic muscles) and had to leave his job.
In 1998, soon after Bob retired,  Alvis, Millie and Bob moved to Florida.  Alvis continued to struggle with mobility, but his health was good until 2005 when it began to deteriorate and his sister decided to bring him to the nursing home at Indigo Manor. He began using a scooter for transportation since he was unable to walk on his own.  During his stay, he became well known in the facility because he went everywhere on that scooter and Alvis, like his Dad,  never met a stranger.
Alvis's greatest joys were his Commodore 64 computer, jig-saw puzzles and southern gospel, religious music.    He  was also well known for his love of children and his many acts of kindness toward them. He would spend hours patiently sorting and putting the jig saw pieces together and also spent much time listening to his music. Alvis passed away peacefully on November 18, 2014.  He is survived by brother-in-law  Bob Hoke niece Marsha Budd, nephew Doug Hoke  and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in Florida, Southern Illinois and Virginia.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday November 30, 2014 at Aly Funeral Home in Eddyville, IL. Interment will follow the service at Sulphur Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm until time of service on Sunday.
